Whether you want to hire a part-time freelancer or a full-time web developers, hiring a technical person can be a difficult task despite the fact that you may have a lot of hiring experience.

You simply can’t know whether a web developer has the right skills and experience if you yourself do not have any experience in the web development field, and it takes years to become an expert in a programming field. So what is the solution? How can you hire web developers when you are not a tech person?

First of all, select the right technologies.

It’s extremely important that you get your application developed using the right technologies. But how can you know which technologies will be appropriate for the type of applications you need developed? Ruby, Python, PHP, ASP.NET, Angular JS?

You can read articles from authoritative sites to know which technologies will be the best fit for the type of work you have. You can also seek help from experienced web developers to select the right technologies.

Seek help from a web developer for technical questions.

To gauge the depth of a web developer’s knowledge, you need to ask the right technical questions, and only the development gurus know what questions should be asked.

Even if you can manage to ask the right technical questions, you can’t understand whether your candidate is giving the right answer. Furthermore, you can’t get a clear idea about his depth of experience from his answer whereas a technical guru would be able to identify how much knowledge and experience the candidate possesses.

So the simplest thing you can do to handle this situation is to hire a programming guru -- an expert with years of experience. Finding someone whom you know personally would be better in this situation. You can look for such people in your professional network or search for such a consultant in your city.

Your technical guru will test the candidate’s technical abilities while you can assess their personality, communication skills, etc. Thus, with two people will be interviewing a web developer, you would be able to make a more comprehensive assessment.

Hire a web developer who is the right fit for your work.

Do not look for just an experienced web developer. Rather, look for someone who will be the perfect fit for the type of programming work that you need. I suggest you look for a developer who has worked on similar projects.

A person who has a lot of experience in working on projects that are very similar to your project can produce exceptionally high-quality results for you. When someone works on the same type of project over and over again, we can say that he has mastered it. So if you find someone who has worked on several projects similar to the type of work that you need done, he is probably the best fit for you.

Tips about job ads

Posting job ads on job sites will make the hiring process a lot easier. But you need to keep a few things in mind regarding posting job ads on these sites.

  • Keep the job description as short as possible. Avoid including unnecessary information as it can confuse people. One of the main mistakes that recruiters make is that they add too much text explaining irrelevant things instead of focusing on exactly what they are looking for.
  • In your job post, give a clear picture of who is the right candidate for you. This will increase the chance that only the right people will apply for the job.
  • There are many job sites on the Internet. So instead of posting on just one site, you can consider posting on multiple sites so that more candidates apply to your job post. Then you’ll be able to choose from many candidates instead of just a few ones, which is obviously a great advantage for you.

Conclusion

Having great technical knowledge is not sufficient, your candidate should also have great communication skills so that he can communicate effectively with other members of your organization and that he can motivate others. People skills such as active listening, good judgement, patience, empathy, persuasion skills, good sense of humor, body language, etc. are very important. So you need to look for these skills in your candidate. Your candidate should also be honest and should have good manners.

Dale Carnegie, the author of the world-famous book titled ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ said in his book,

“One can for example, hire mere technical ability in engineering, accountancy, architecture or any other profession at nominal salaries. But the person who has technical knowledge plus the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people-that person is headed for higher earning power.”

This article explained how to hire web developers when you don’t have technical knowledge. To sum up, first of all, you need to choose the technologies that will give you the desired results. Hiring a programming guru for the interview will make things easier as he can ask the right technical questions and can understand his technical ability, and instead of hiring just any experienced web developer for a particular technology, you should hire someone who has developed similar applications. As someone who has worked on similar projects can produce great results.

PayPal stops Personal Payments in Singapore

I guess those of you who has a Paypal account received an email from them saying that "In accordance with regulatory instructions, we would like to inform you that Personal Payments will not be available in Singapore with effect from 20 February 2013..."

WTH, Singapore regulations?!!? No further explaination given by Paypal though. Is it to curb loan-shark activities?

What do you think?
